mark of the beast prototype?

Revelation 13:16He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, 17so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.

for a long time, people have assumed that this thing - if it were going to come to pass - would be in computer chip form holding all your identity - such as bank account, ss#, medical history etc and therefore you'd be unable to buy or sell without this thing which would be like your, virtual wallet or something.
